Saddle Up for Christmas By Sabrina Soriano

The day dawned bright and sunny last Wednesday, December 10, after 2 days of inclement weather due to typhoon Ruby. It seemed that our prayers had been answered as that was the day the Zonta Club of Alabang had scheduled “Saddle Up”, their Christmas outreach event with the PGH Pediatric Ward and Cancer Institute patients/students.

The children and parents had excitedly been awaiting this event for weeks, an activity that was very different for them. Instead of the usual field trips to the zoo, museums, and amusement parks, they would be given an opportunity to interact with horses! With a sense of anticipation, they all came early to PGH, where they were picked up by a bus provided by Zonta, to be brought to Manila Polo Club for the main event of the morning.

The 25 children were divided into 3 groups so they could take turns with the 3 different activities prepared for them. This also allowed the Zonta members and Manila Polo Club riders and members to better interact with the children. Each group was excited as they were given the chance to groom and feed, ride, and even paint the horses. The children enjoyed it so much, some of them were even asking their mommies if they could bring home the horses!

And that was not all that they had prepared. The Zonta members and Manila Polo Club riders and members also bought gifts specifically for each child. The kids were very excited as they opened the special gifts that they were given. They were given well thought of gifts – dolls, dresses they could wear for Christmas, rainbow loom set, Disney Princess book, etc.

Thank you to the Zonta Club of Alabang, headed by President Michelle Yu, for this outreach activity. Big thanks also to Mia Virata, Chairman of the Saddle Up Committee (who is a member of both Zonta and Manila Polo and is the riding instructor as well) who thought of this event, and to Tintin San Juan, Co-Chairman (who is a member of both Zonta and the Single Young Adults of Santuario de San Antonio) for thinking of the PGH patients/students for this. The children and the parents will forever treasure this experience.

If you have old toys, books, school bags and supplies that you can spare, to give and to share, I hope you can consider donating them to our Hospital Ministry (you can look for Nimfa Dumago at the parish office). Such a small gesture means a lot to these charity patients. Their big smiles are proof this.

PGH TOY GIVING by Sabrina Soriano

The Hospital Ministry visits the various hospitals it supports on a weekly basis to give medicines to the patients. This past week though, we were blessed by a kind family that donated toys that were gifts for their child’s birthday. They also added toys that their daughter didn’t use anymore so that other kids could use and enjoy them. Though the medicines are much needed to ensure their recovery from their illnesses/infections, you could really see the kids’ faces light up when they received a toy. One of those kids (the cute little boy sitting on the wooden cart) was actually abandoned by his parents after bringing him to the hospital for treatment. Despite his situation, receiving a toy made him break out into a huge smile!

So nice to be able to help them, not just with their medical needs, but also to bring smiles to their faces. Thanks so much Pia Lacerna and family for this!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAZEL! By Sabrina Soriano

7The Hospital Ministry had a mini celebration with one of the patients they support in PGH. Hazel Elmundo had been confined in the pediatric ward due to massive pericardial effusion with hospital acquired infection. She had also been diagnosed with malnutrition.

Due to their circumstances, the family could not afford to purchase the prescribed medication for Hazel’s condition. The Hospital Ministry, as part of its objectives in providing antibiotics and medication to the patients, has been helping the family by providing them with the medication she needs for 3 weeks already.

On July 22, the Hospital Ministry once again visited, not just to give antibiotics, but also to help make Hazel’s 1st birthday more special for her. They gifted her with toys, clothes, shoes, and her birthday cake. You could really see her enjoying her chocolate cake as she ate!

The best gift of all though is her doctor making sure that she is okay and free to be discharged on her special day. You could really see the care and how attached Dr. Jeffrey Lappay was with Hazel, in the way he interacted with her and how excited he was when he saw us arriving with the birthday gifts for her.
We hope you can include Hazel and her complete recovery in your prayers.

SYA PGH SNK School End of Year Celebration by Sabrina Soriano

With the school year just ended, SYA planned and organized an end of year celebration for the PGH Silahis ng Kalusugan elementary and high school students. This was attended by the students, their parents, the teachers, and volunteers from church and SYA.

For most of us, one year is just a wink in our lives, something we take for granted, especially when we get bogged down by career, relationship and financial problems. For these students, one year in their lives means so much! With all of them with health / medical ailments, most of them congenital diseases, one year means another year where they have battled their conditions successfully. Being in the Silahis ng Kalusugan School in PGH allows them to have the support that they need – physically (in terms of the readily available medical services in the hospital) but most especially, emotionally through the support that they get from their classmates and the parents who are in the same position as themselves.

This party was a celebration of their lives – a year full of successes in being a survivor and still being able to study and attain achievements in school.

Congratulations are in order to Ryza, Cheycel and Josan, high school graduates, who are now embarking on a new journey in their lives. Good luck in whatever endeavor or course you undertake! You have all gone through so much already and have succeeded with smiles on your faces and a positive outlook in life. We know that with your strong hearts and minds, you will be winners in whatever goal you strive for.
