St. Francis of Assisi Celebrated By Edmund Lim

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

In celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the SSAP community organized Triduum masses from Oct. 1-3, blessing of pets on Oct. 4 and the praying of the Franciscan Crown Rosary at the main church.

The Franciscan Crown (or Seraphic Rosary) dates back to the year 1422. A young novice in the Franciscan Order who previously was accustomed to expressing his devotion to the Blessed Virgin by adorning her statue with a wreath of fresh flowers was prevented from continuing this practice in the novitiate. This caused him so much distress that he considered leaving the Order.

The Blessed Virgin Mary then appeared to him instructing him to recite a Rosary of seven decades in honor of her seven joys allowing him to weave a “crown” more pleasing to her than flowers on her statue. From that time on the practice of the “crown of the seven joys” became a custom in the Order. The Crown recalls the seven joys of Mary and how she responded to the grace of God in her life. This beautiful prayer signifies the unity of our parish by praying together.

The parish community then joined in a salu-salo dinner at the parish center where ministry members contributed their culinary specialties while being serenaded by the SSAP Antioch Youth Group. It was a lively dinner where everyone broke bread and celebrated together in a family atmosphere.

Special thanks to Dee Jalandoni-Chan, chairperson of the Lectors and Commentators Ministry; Zari Poe, co-chairperson of the Altar Environment Ministry & core groups leader of CWL and Tina Teehankee, PPC secretary & chairperson of OFS.

Koro Ilustrado: Higher

4The torrential rains did not dampen the spirit of Koro Ilustrado nor did it stop their family, friends and supporters from the parish – headed by our beloved Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Reu Jose C. Galoy, Music Ministry Head Mr. Edmund Lim and other members of the Parish Pastoral Council – as the all-male choir staged their fourth major concert last Saturday, August 2, with higher aspirations and a higher purpose.3
Dubbed as Koro Ilustrado: Higher, the concert was both a kick-off to the choir’s fundraising activities — as it aspires to participate in festivals and compete at international choral competitions abroad next year — and also share part of the proceeds with the disadvantaged children of the Bahay-Ampunan nina Hesus, Maria at Jose.
5
Bahay-Ampunan was founded in 1998 and situated within the convent grounds of the Blessed Sacrament Missionaries of the Poor Brothers by providing for the primary needs of disadvantaged children like food and medicine. Five boys from Bahay-Ampunan accompanied by a brother were part of the audience. One of the boys even rendered a song, acapella, as their way of participating in the night’s musical treat and showing gratitude for the generosity of all donors that evening.
2
Meanwhile, Fr. Efren Jimenez led the opening prayer and Koro Ilustrado praised and thanked God with the first song “Confitemini Domino” (Psalm 106:1), a sacred motet by Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina. The Ilustrados sang their hearts out throughout the evening with a broad repertoire which included a German Lied by Franz Schubert “Die Nacht,” contemporary arrangement in Latin of the prayer “Anima Christi” (by John August Pamintuan) and a text from the Canticle of Simeon “Nunc dimittis” (by Joy Nilo), a modern Ilocano folk song “Ubing a Battit,” as well as 80s hits like Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me,” John Lennon’s “Imagine,” the inspirational “Warrior Is A Child” and Depeche Mode’s “People are People.” Koro Ilustrado, known for their flair for entertainment, also showcased their versatility by belting out and dancing up to recent hits like Beyonce’s “Halo” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” mashed up with Psy’s “Gangnam.” 1
The rains may have continued heavily outside but the support and appreciation for the Ilustrados were similarly outpouring inside the Santuario de San Antonio. In the end, Koro Ilustrado obliged two encore numbers and ended with a high-energy, celebratory rendition of Shakira’s “Waka-waka.”

The concert was not made possible without the full support of the parish and with this, Koro Ilustrado is sincerely grateful.
Koro Ilustrado is a member of the Santuario de San Antonio Parish Music Ministry and serves during the 4:30pm Mass every 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. “Seven Last Words of Christ” by Javier Luis Gomez

“For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.“

Rom 12:4-5

As we enter into Holy Week, we approach the summit of the liturgical year. It is a time that draws us in to the very heart of the Christian mystery. Through the Triduum the saving love of God continues to manifest itself in our lives today.

To help us enter more fully into the mystery, we invite everyone to attend a meditation on the seven last words of Christ. Friday is the day that Jesus died on the cross. It was on this day that his body was beaten, persecuted, scourged, spat on and crucified. Today, Christ’s body is still tortured, persecuted, discriminated and killed. Beyond the borders of the Philippines, Christians all over the world continue to participate in the sufferings of Christ.

This unique meditation will bring to us sharers from different backgrounds and different cultural milieu. They will share with us their experiences of being Catholic in different parts of the world, and how in their experiences they find solidarity with Jesus Christ.

From Malaysia, Peter Toyat shares with us his experiences living in a country that is a melting pot of different faiths and cultures. Peter is actively involved in Christian-Muslim dialogue and interreligious dialogue in his home country.

Ian Monsod is from our parish and has recently returned home after living in the America for many years. He brings to us a story of struggling to keep his faith in a culture that is becoming increasingly secularized.

Sister Luz Mariais a Columbian sister who has been in the Philippines for many years, working at the Holy Family Home is Taguig. She compares her Latin-American roots to our own Filipino context and how there is much we can learn from each other.

Sr. Mary Vanaja, MCJ (Vana) is an Indian sister shares with us the history of the Indian church and how it has deep Christian roots that come out of the period of great missionary evangelization. The Church in India today faces many struggles that are shared by many Asians across the region.

Fufu Widjaya is a wife and mother of three young children. She has lived in Manila for almost ten years now, after having grown up in Indonesia. She shares with us her experiences growing up as a minority Catholic in a country that is mostly Muslim – and how that experienced has shaped her today.

Father Rey Legayadahas recently spent much time stationed with the Franciscans in Spain. Over his time there he has seen many of the changes that the Church in Europe has undergone and he shares his own insights on that reality.

Mara Eala spent some time after her studies to volunteer with the Assumption sisters in east Africa last year. She traveled around Tanzania and Kenya helping the sisters with their ministry. She shares with us what she has seen from the Church in Africa.

Each of the sharers will share with us their experiences with the universal church. As we contemplate on the sufferings of Christ, let us also meditate on the sufferings the body of Christ continues to experience today.

The Seven Last Words takes place on Good Friday – 1:30pm to 3pm.

CONCERT NIGHT at Resorts World Manila, Oct. 3, 2012

OH, WHAT A NIGHT!
FRANCISFEST with DAVID BENOIT

“Francisfest with David Benoit” Concert was held at the Newport Performance Art Theater in Resorts World Manila, October 3, 2012, where a sumptuous buffet of appetizers, salad, sushi, pasta, pizza, chicken barbecue, cheesecake, welcomed the VIP and Premium ticket holders at the reception hall, before the show.

Retro band, Mulatto, opened the show with some popular 70s and 80s favorites with crooner, Thor, rendering James Ingram’s, “There’s Just No Easy Way” to set the mood for the night. It was followed by PPC President and Producer of the Concert, Mike Limpe, who gave a welcome speech, thanking everyone who came and the generous support of the sponsors. Then, Santuario de San Antonio’s Parish Priest, Fr. Joel Sulse, OFM, gave a short background on the life of St. Francis and to say the opening prayer while Chairperson of the Francisfest 2012 Committee, Petrona Lim, briefly spoke about the beneficiaries of SSAP Foundation, who would gain so much with the help of the Francisfest.

Just when the main show was about to begin, the 1,340 people in the audience were not aware that the star of the show was suddenly pulled out, backstage, to have a meet and greet with the President of the Philippines. President Aquino, who was viewing the show from a private box, above the Theater, was not sure he could stay throughout the show and wanted to make sure he meets David Benoit, personally. Mr. Benoit felt very privileged that he lost track of how much time he was chatting with the President. So Director/Producer, Doy Bitanga, had to get the escorts to bring him back on stage.

The jazz pianist was still abit flustered when he came on stage. Once he started playing the piano, the delay was all forgotten. Benoit made it an intimate evening, humbly confiding to the audience about the tough selection of songs chosen by the Director/Producer, which he hadn’t been asked to play, live, before. Afterall, he has recorded 500 songs in his career of 35 years. Once he got himself warmed up on the piano, the audience can feel his excitement building up with the rest of the songs, jumping from his seat a few times and even dancing while playing the synthesizer.

Saxophone player, Michael Paulo, also wowed the audience. 2 of the 20 songs Benoit performed, “Chichi’s Eyes” and “Rainbows” were accompanied by a ballet dance, performed beautifully by 7 of ACTS Manila’s best dancers, choreographed by their directress, Chelo Gemina. 4 of the songs were performed with the lead vocals of Mulatto, Joey Bautista, Anna Jomeo and Jonathan Tamayo, individually, while 1 was performed with Thor. Migi Domingo lent his voice to do the voice-over for the night. It was a show like no other! It sure was a night to remember.

FRANCISFEST is the annual fund raising event of Santuario de San Antonio Parish. Beneficiaries of this event funds the different programs and projects of the Parish Foundation like PGH and Rizal Medical Hospital Ministry, the educational scholarship program of SSAPF, the poor and elderly amongst the little Friends of St. Francis in the Friendship Home and Friends of St. Anthony in our parish and the Prison Ministry.

Our deepest gratitude to all who supported this event!
