“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
“And God saw that it was good ….. very good.”
Inspired by the Franciscan spirit and St. Francis’ spirituality so connected to the love and care of God’s creation, the Santuario de San Antonio Parish’s Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation – JPIC ECOlogy Ministry – strives to practice and ensure that we are all aware and conscious of our calling to be GOOD and RESPONSIBLE STEWARDS OF GOD’S CREATION (Tayo ay katiwala ng kalikasan).
About twenty (20) years ago, a group with high environmental concerns formed an Ecology Ministry in Santuario de San Antonio Parish. This Ministry involved enhancing the parish grounds with a garden, developing liturgies to promote environmental consciousness, observing an Earth Day every year, celebrating a Sunrise Mass in the open air at 5:00 a.m., and calling upon St. Francis, the Patron Saint of Ecology, to guide and bless our efforts to promote environmental protection.
This Ministry operated on a humble and low-keyed basis. We feel that it is time, in view of Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the Environment and Climate Change, to bring these concerns to the forefront, to extend its influence to the minds and hearts of the San Antonio parishioners. In the long term, we expect to show a good example to other parishes and beyond to other entities and organizations, to work for the preservation of the environment and the care of Mother Earth.
At present, the JPIC Ecology Ministry oversees the caring, maintenance and beautification of the church gardens – day to day gardening which includes cultivation, removal of dry leaves, pruning, trimming of branches, propagation and planting on bare areas by the JPIC ECOlogy gardeners who partner with the parish staff/groundskeepers who are in charge of sweeping, watering, and keeping the grounds clean and trash disposal.
God in his goodness has surrounded us with such natural beauty, as we worship together – whether we come to participate in the Eucharistic celebration in the Main Church, spend a few moments in the Adoration Chapel or visit the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, walk through the Stations of the Cross and Mary’s Woods, visit the Crypts or the Multi-Purpose Chaper areas, attend seminars and functions in the Parish Center, and most especially in the Convento Garden – there is the constant and daily reminder that God’s love is ever present in nature.
